Indian recipies: Tomato Onion Raita

I can live without canonical needs but not without Dahi/curd. I cherish it in every form possible. Now, Raita is an Indian (Okay, Pakistani / Bangladeshi too) condiment made with yogurt(dahi) and used as a sauce or dip. Indians cherish a large variety of raitas. Homemade yogurt tastes delicious and is very refreshing. The yogurt may be seasoned with coriander (cilantro), cumin, mint, cayenne pepper, and other herbs and spices. Raita is a simple preparation made by adding fruits, vegetables or any other thing to beaten curds. Most Indian families (like mine) enjoy curd in the form of delicious raita as an accompaniment with lunch or dinner. Raita is unique because it is cool, sharp, pungent and spicy at the same time. Yogurt is high in protein and calcium. It is easy to make, you only need milk and the right culture/starter.

Tomato onion raita is deliciously made with curd, tomato and onions seasoned with a tempering of mustard and cumin seeds, fresh curry leaves and spiced with some green chilies. Pyaz tamatar ka raita is generally served with rice and roties.

  1. Hi Abhilasha,

Hmmm, I like raita but not the plain variety. I like to have something added to the raita to improve its taste. This looks like a good concoction. I also like pineapple raita quite a lot.
Thanks for sharing this recipe with us 🙂
